About the Dragon

The World of Wonder dragon sculpture was designed by a group of child volunteers in 2002 as part of the original design of WOW. WOW volunteers, with the help of local industrial designer Ollivier Bonamy and local artist and sculptor Stan Mullins, have further developed the children's vision and created a fun, climbable structure that meets safety standards. While older children are often bored with traditional playgrounds, the dragon design is intended to keep their attention and be a catalyst for movement.

More than 100 feet in length, the body of the dragon consists of a series of large concrete mounds and covered in rubberized surface material. Mounds are large enough for simultaneous play of several children, inviting them to perch, scale, make believe and most importantly, move.

The head, which will be smaller than the two mounds and covered in the same colorful rubberized surfacing material, will be sculpted by local artist Stan Mullins to look like a dragon face. This less imposing element offers small children another opportunity to climb and explore.

The tail will be comprised of innovative components from Kompan, a leading international playground equipment manufacturer. These elements will incorporate movement and safely challenge children to explore the world of play.
