(ATHENS, GA) The World of Wonder Playground will welcome its latest edition, when the Dragon sculpture is unveiled Saturday, April 19 at Noon. The event is part of the 3rd annual Walk in the Park at Southeast Clarke Park.
The Dragon is based on a drawing by Lars Hall, a student at the Athens Montessori School, and on the vision of a children’s committee that developed the original design for the World of Wonder. . The purple and green Dragon is located to the east of the WOW Playground facing the castle towers of the structure.
The Dragon’s head and body are stationary, climbable structures covered in a rubberized material and the tail consists of a series of innovative play elements. The Dragon is a project of the Friends of Southeast Clarke Park and was designed and constructed by renowned industrial designer Ollivier Bonamy and artist and sculptor Stan Mullins.
This project was made possible through several generous donations including Publix Supermarket Charities, Loco’s Grill and Pub, CertainTeed; Plum Creek Foundation; Plexus; Industrial Mechanical, Inc; Athens First Bank and Trust; the Bellah Family; Bojangle’s; Trinity Accounting Group and Wal-Mart (Lexington Road). Home Depot, Lowe’s (Lexington Road) and TUCCO Concrete also donated materials.
Other grand openings activities include a dragon arts and crafts activity led by Lyndon House Arts Center staff and a nature walk led by Sandy Creek Nature Center staff. Complimentary popcorn and soft drinks will be served.
The WOW Playground opened in 2004 and is located on the Whit Davis side of SE Clarke Park.
